My mom has given me a lot of great guidance over the years, though every now and then she might steer me the wrong way. For example, that one time she convinced me that I would look good with *extremely* short hair (think two inches longer than a pixie). Not so hot-in fact I hated it so much there is no photographic evidence.
I think pretty much every parent tells their kids this, but for as long as I can remember I can hear my mom's voice to telling me to follow my gut. It is something I operate on a daily basis and I feel like I have avoided some extremely dangerous situations by doing this and have benefited from making a choice just on instinct alone.
When I'm having a hard time making a choice, I close my eyes, exhale deeply and just clear my mind. The answer generally just comes to me and if something is still nagging at me-I take the time to listen. The times I have gone against my instincts have usually turned out the opposite as desired.
I hope that I can teach my girls this lesson as much as my mom did for me. I truly believe based off this advice, I am where I am now because of it.
